Super middleweight contender David Benavidez wasn't shocked by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's fight announcement.
The undisputed 168lb champion returns to the ring on May 7th for a fight against the WBA world light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol live on DAZN (except Mexico and Latin America), and led to Benavidez claiming Canelo's opponent choice was a pure business decision.
"At the end of the day, we all knew Canelo wouldn’t want to fight me,“ Benavidez said in a statement on BoxingScene.com.
“He’s fought his tough fights, he’s a businessman. For him, it’s not fighting the best; it’s business.”
While Benavidez may be disappointed about not stepping in the ring with Canelo, the 25-year-old is now fully focused on his own career and his next fight in May.
"I’m focused on my career, fighting the best fights I can get with the fighters who are willing to fight me.
“I’m here fighting for my fans.
“Right now it’s my fight for a third WBC world title against David Lemieux. See you all in May.”
