David Benavidez is ready to prove that he deserves a shot at Canelo Alvarez. The former WBC champion at 12st, who lost his title on the scales, is ready to reclaim his title but can only do that by defeating the Mexican icon.
Canelo, who defeated Caleb Plant last week to unify the entire super-middleweight division, is the marquee name across three weight divisions and there’s a stack of contenders ready to face him. Benavidez, one of the few top fighters at 12st who Canelo hasn’t beaten, faces Kyrone Davis this weekend and hopes that he can face Canelo if victorious.
"If I have to earn a chance to fight Canelo and have to fight the top three [contenders], I'm willing to do it," said Benavidez when speaking to ESPN. "It's my job as a fighter and I'll fight whoever as long as they pay me. I just want to fight as much as possible.
"I feel like I've paid my dues. I feel like I'm the strongest candidate to fight Canelo and I'm just ready for the opportunity. My job is to just continue beating these guys and when the opportunity comes, it comes."
