There are mega bouts that are must-see and then there are must-see fights that loom over the sport and stand to define a generation.
The latter is what a potential Gervonta "Tank" Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson clash would mean to boxing in 2025.
And that brings us to DAZN’s sixth New Year’s Resolution for boxing in 2025:
Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson for lightweight supremacy
The collision course between Gervonta "Tank" Davis and Shakur Stevenson has been building and taking shape for quite some time now, making this year the perfect timing for the highly-anticipated super fight to finally happen.
Both are undefeated lightweight world champions, Davis (30-0, 28 knockouts) the WBA lightweight titleholder and Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) owning the WBC strap.
But it’s simulating their styles of boxing that makes this mega bout such a mouthwatering projection for fans.
In one corner, the 30-year-old “Tank” who is perhaps the sweet science’s most emphatic knockout artist with a 93 percent KO rate. The Baltimore, Maryland native has shown a penchant and willingness to take hits in earlier rounds in order to soften up and eventually knock fighters out, making the electricity flowing through his fights palpable.
In the other corner, it’s Stevenson, 27, owner of arguably boxing’s best jab. The Newark, New Jersey native has used that weapon to dictate the ring real estate, using evasive defense and highly-efficient punching to surgically pick apart his opponents in masterful boxing clinics. While Stevenson has gotten criticized for his style lacking fireworks, his efficiency cannot be denied.

If Davis and Stevenson were to fight, the situational sequences and the questions that would likely be answered for boxing fans are:
- Can Stevenson’s stance and brilliant boxing stop a forward-fighting, power-punching “Tank” from knocking him out?
- Can “Tank” bait an adroit sweet scientist like Stevenson into being set up for a dynamic knockout?
- And the third question comes from Davis himself, who said on Morning Kombat: “All that boxing, you’re gonna get hit. What you gonna do when you get hit?”
It’s what a throng of boxing fans want to know as well.
Davis has recently pondered retirement, making the urgency that much greater to make this fight happen.
He also lashed out at reporters last month for continuing to evoke Stevenson’s name in his presence: “What has Shakur done?” Davis asked. “What has he done in the sport? He hasn’t done nothing. He don’t have no offense. Everything is defense. Defense only wins in basketball and football. That s—t don’t win in boxing.”
Davis packs more star power, but that would change if Stevenson can find a way to manufacture a victory.
The two have traded verbal jabs plenty of times before.
This year, those insults should turn to punches in the ring.
After all, declaring this generation’s best at lightweight is at stake.
