Deontay Wilder is still planning on a second reign as a world champion.
The 36-year-old American was the WBC title holder for over six years, claiming the title when he defeated Bermane Stiverne before losing to Tyson Fury in February 2021.
He had a trilogy rematch last year as he attempted to win back the belt, but despite an improved showing, he could not take down the British heavyweight and has been out of the ring for competitive action for almost a year now.
He is now due to fight Robert Helenius on October 15 as he attempts a comeback. It is expected that should Wilder win, he will face an eliminator with Andy Ruiz - who defeated Luis Ortiz last Sunday - to become the WBC’s mandatory challenger. That would tee him up for potentially a fourth scrap with Fury, but he could take on three-belt champion Oleksandr Usyk if the pair meet for an undisputed clash. Wilder cuts a lean figure since his time away, but speaking at his press conference last week to promote the Helenius fight, he made it plain what he expects from the future.
“The second reign is going to be a fun reign for me,” he said, reported BoxingScene.com.
