On Saturday, Deontay Wilder suffered a brutal knockout at the hands of Zhilei Zhang in the main event of the Queensbury vs. Matchroom 5v5. After the loss, many pundits called for his retirement. Wilder has yet to announce a decision but his mother, Deborah Wilder, says she'd like to see him hang up his gloves for good.
According to USA Today, she said, “I texted him and said, 'Son, we’re having a party for you. You gave us the best boxing in the USA when boxing was dead. You’ve gotten older. You’ve ran your course in your journey. It’s time to celebrate. Enjoy your life now. Teach other young men how to become a champion.'”
She also told the outlet, "He brought back boxing to the USA, and we enjoyed all those knockouts. I taped them and I’m going to look back at them. We gonna to laugh, we gonna to cry. But we gonna be happy."
Wilder is coming off his second loss in a row and has won just one fight in his last five. He's been TKO/KO'd in three of his four losses, as well.
