Devin Haney provided a sceptical update on the possibility of fighting Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
Haney was talking at a press conference held after his win over Regis Prograis in San Francisco on Saturday night, where he became the WBC champion at super lightweight.
Davis has fought at super lightweight before, and fought a little lighter earlier in the year in a victory over Ryan Garcia.
Garcia is angling for a match-up with Haney, something the new champion appears ready to entertain.
However, he believes that Davis is not truly committed to the idea of their own bout.
He said: “Tank don’t really want to fight, because if he wanted it, he would be trying to talk up the fight, instead of trying to knock it down and saying I’m only selling because of this, or because of that.
“If he really wanted to fight he would be making it that, you know, it’s a big fight, it’s the best fight for boxing, but he only talks down on the fight. But like I said: let’s fight.”
Bill Haney, his son’s trainer, was also holding back when discussing the chances of making the fight.
“How much money is the guy charging?” He began. “So the message to all the fans is stop letting Tank and his team p*** on your head and tell you it’s rain.
“With these fights, the incidents for these fights, and understand it’s for the culture. It represents the culture, and boxing, and what boxing should be and what boxing is.
