Canelo Alvarez has faced a who's who of boxing in his illustrious career.
Boxing's current pound-for-pound king has taken on Floyd Mayweather Jr., Gennadiy Golovkin (twice), Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout. Coming up on Saturday, May 7, the undisputed super-middleweight kingpin moves up to light heavyweight as he challenges WBA (super) champion Dmitry Bivol live on DAZN PPV (check for Canelo vs. Bivol on DAZN in your country).
On his weekly appearance on The DAZN Boxing Show, Eddie Hearn, who will be promoting the fight, feels that out of all of Alvarez's past opponents, Bivol could be the toughest of them all except for one.
“I’ve got to tell you, I’m not even talking about Canelo Alvarez against GGG until this Bivol fight is over,” Hearn said. “I saw clips of Bivol. He’s looking sensational on the pads — his footwork, his movement, his punching power. I’m telling you now; this may be the toughest fight of Canelo Alvarez’s career outside of Floyd Mayweather. This is a really tough fight."
Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) looks to defend his title for the 11th consecutive time if he overcomes Alvarez's challenge. Depending on who you talk to, some people consider the Bivol the top guy at 175 pounds while others consider unified champion Artur Beterbiev the king of the light heavyweights. Hearn believes that Bivol has more attributes than Beterbiev, which gives him the edge.
“I think if you’re talking about destruction and power, (Artur) Beterbiev is the guy. If you’re talking about technical ability mixed with a little bit of punch power, smartness, freshness, you’re talking about Dmitry Bivol. Beterbiev is old. There are signs against Callum Johnson, against these guys. When have you seen Dmitry Bivol hurt in a fight? When have you seen Dmitry Bivol really look like he might lose a fight? Never. How good is Dmitry Bivol? We’re gonna find out.”
