Eddie Hearn is fully aware of what’s at stake when Jordan Thompson receives his maiden world title crack on September 30, exclusively live on DAZN.
The Manchester puncher has it all to do against Australia’s Jai Opetaia but victory for the underdog would send his profile soaring as he becomes a major player in the cruiserweight division.
Thompson’s rise so far in boxing has been an impressive one with several highlight reel stoppages but he faced some adversity last summer when he was almost stopped by Vasil Ducar.
Thompson looked great on his return earlier this year and Hearn believes this is an incredible opportunity for the 30-year-old.
"I was thinking I will give him two fights and then get him in contention for a world title,” said Hearn when speaking to Mailsport regarding Thompson. “Then Richard Riakphore pulls out of his world title fight and Opetaia wanted a defence.
“Jordan was there ready, and we got the fight together. In one fight, Jordan could become the No.1 cruiserweight in the world. It's a really good fight. It's a dangerous one for both boxers but it's an exciting one.”
