Edgar Berlanga generated plenty of buzz in boxing for starting his professional career with 16 straight first-round knockouts.
Although five of his last six victories have come via unanimous decision to remain undefeated, the Brooklyn, New York fighter did produce a sixth-round TKO of Padraig McCrory in February to get back to his power punching exploits.
The 27-year-old Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) will look to put that punching power on greater display September 14, live on DAZN, when he challenges unified super middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs).
Already, Berlanga believes Alvarez has never faced as devastating a puncher.
"A thousand percent," Berlanga began telling Fight Hub TV recently. "Bro, I knocked heavyweights out in sparring. Guys 230, 240, putting them out.
"From the four years being away from Mark [Farrait], my trainer you know when we split, I got away from that," he continued. "I lost the killer instinct."
Berlanga added: "I got felons on my team, ex felons, guys that did a lot of years in prison, so I got that mentality. In that ring, I'm a killer so that's just what I bring."
Although Berlanga respects all that Alvarez has accomplished across his legendary boxing career, the respect has to end in the ring, according to him.
"You bleed like me, you breathe the same air I breathe, you walk on the same Earth that I walk on, he's nothing different," Berlanga insisted. "He's not a robot from outer space. He's a human. It's the mental, it's the mentality."
He tacked on: "I got to go out there and just do what I do. Do my thing and just turn up for the city and put my name in the history book like a legend."
