Like Dmitry Bivol and Jaime Munguia, Edgar Berlanga stands several inches over Canelo Alvarez with a slight reach advantage.
As Berlanga prepares to challenge the unified super middleweight world champion on September 14, live on DAZN, he noted what he learned from Alvarez's fights with Bivol and Munguia.
Alvarez suffered a unanimous decision loss to Bivol in May 2022 — the Mexican superstar's first defeat in nearly nine years — with the Russian fighter's prodding jab frustrating the face of boxing all night.
Although Alvarez defeated Munguia via unanimous decision this past May, Berlanga liked the younger fighter's game plan early on.
From watching those fights, Berlanga concluded on the Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo Podcast: "[Alvarez] has a problem with a great jab on bigger guys that throw straight punches, that keeps the distance on him.
"If we keep him from a distance, using the jab, you know the main thing right now is using that jab in his face for 12 rounds," Berlanga continued. "Bivol averaged like 60, 70 jabs a round."
Berlanga noted how Munguia did some positive things against Alvarez also.
"I think Munguia fought a great fight until I feel he got tired and he started really like lunging in," Berlanga continued. "He's a guy that's 6'1" (editor's note: 6'0") and he went down to 5'7" and took his height off on him and let him bang him up and stuff. If Munguia had the right IQ for the fight, he could have beaten him easily."
Berlanga added: "He had the same attributes. He's big, he throws a lot of punches, he could take a punch. He just lacked the IQ of keeping Canelo from the outside."
The undefeated Brooklyn, New York fighter insists his outcome against Alvarez will be a victory and that he has the tools to produce what would be a massive upset.
"I got all the attributes and better than what Bivol has and all these guys," Berlanga said. "I just got to follow the game plan we got. He's been beaten before. It's not like he has an 0 on his record, and he's never been touched, never been beaten.
"That guy's been beaten numerous times. There's fights out there that he did lose and they still gave it to him because obviously he's the bigger draw."
