Eimantas Stanionis wants to add more world welterweight titles to his collection.
Stanionis makes his first defence of the WBA (Regular) title on Saturday against Gabriel Maestre, whom he is fighting as part of the massive Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia card that is available live on DAZN PPV.
The Lithuanian world champ won the WBA belt by defeating Radzhab Butaev more than two years ago, and he's now got eyes on another welterweight strap that's being defended on the same show this weekend.
Speaking at the pre-fight press conference on Thursday, Stanionis explained that while he's not looking past his opponent, he already has plans to challenge for the WBC welterweight belt being contested by interim champion Mario Barrios and Fabian Maidana on Saturday.
A win against Maestre, Stanionis explained, would propel him to such a fight.
“I know he’s coming with everything," Stanionis said of Maestre. "This fight is do or die for him, but it’s the same for me. Being on this card is a dream come true and I’m ready to do anything I can to keep my belt.
“I’m not overlooking Maestre, because he’s a tough fighter, but of course I want the winner of Barrios vs. Maidana. I want to be a throwback fighter and take on all challengers.
“I’m coming to bring fireworks. I’m prepared to deliver something special and I can’t wait to see everyone on Saturday.”
