It's official: Errol Spence Jr. and Yordenis Ugas will square off April 16 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The duo had been talking about setting up a unification bout for the first half of 2022, with Tuesday's announcement the end result of those discussions. Spence holds the WBC and IBF welterweight titles while Ugas became the WBA (Super) champion after defeating Manny Pacquiao in August 2021.
It will be the third fight for Spence at AT&T Stadium, as the 31-year-old fought his most recent bout at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in Dec. 2020 (a win over Danny Garcia). Spence also defeated Mikey Garcia in Arlington in early 2019.
Spence (27-0, 21 KOs) has been out of action since the 2020 victory against Danny Garcia, and saw a planned 2021 bout with Pacquiao scrapped after undergoing eye surgery. Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs) stepped in on less than two weeks' notice and defeated Pacquiao by unanimous decision.
Terence Crawforld holds the WBO welterweight belt, and the Spence vs. Ugas fight could create a path toward an undisputed title fight somewhere down the line.
