This weekend saw Errol Spence Jr. defeated Cuban Yordenis Ugas to unify the WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight titles, leaving Crawford's WBO belt as the only obstacle to becoming the undisputed champion at 147lbs.
As soon as Spence stepped out of the ring, the offers started pouring in for Crawford, who decided to leave Top Rank last year and declared himself a free agent.
Since 2018 the possibility of a Spence-Crawford showdown has generated huge excitement amongst boxing fans, but the politics of the sport seemed to be stopping this mega-fight from happening...until now.
While Oscar de la Hoya offered to help Crawford "for free" when it came to making the fight with Spence, Floyd Mayweather revealed to FightHype.com that his sights are set on adding Crawford to his ranks.
"It's no different than when the Chinese support the Chinese, the Dominicans support the Dominicans, the Puerto Ricans support the Puerto Ricans and the Mexicans support the Mexicans. I am a black American. I'm going to support a black American first," said Mayweather, who alongside this proposal rumors of an exit of Gervonta Davis - his signature fighter - from his team continue to grow.
"I have always wanted the best for Terence Crawford, always. Hopefully everything will work out the way it should, and of course, I would love to sign Terence Crawford. I've talked about getting Terence Crawford the fights he wants.
"Everything has a time and a place. But I think every fighter should have the dream of being a promoter. Promoting is hard work. You can look at me, for example. I wanted to be a promoter to help fighters, but the more I help them, the more they hate me. That comes with the territory. That comes with the sport. It is what it is.
"I want to put boxers in a position where they get the lion's share. Before Floyd Mayweather became a promoter in the sport, the promoters were getting the lion's share and they were getting more money than the fighters..... I changed that so that the fighters would get a lot of money," he concluded.
