Floyd Mayweather knows that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis may leave Mayweather Promotions as he nears the end of his current deal.
Mayweather retired with a 50-0 unbeaten record, ending with a huge money-spinning fight against UFC fighter Conor McGregor, but he beat names such as Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez along the way.
He signed Tank to his promotional company and carefully steered the fighter through various divisions to amass belts of various standings, but that has left Davis open to accusations that he is yet to be fully tested, and that he does not face the best the lightweight division has to offer.
Last year it appeared that he could meet Ryan Garcia but the former WBC mandatory challenger will instead fight Emmanuel Tagoe in a comeback fight on April 9, live on DAZN.
For his part, Tank is due to fight Rolando Romero on May 28th, a fighter better known for his controversial outbursts than his fighting prowess. Davis tweeted and then deleted that, “My contract is up, that’s why [Mayweather Promotion] wants me to fight this clown so bad.”
Speaking to FightHype.com, Mayweather — who himself bought his way out of a Top Rank contract — accepted that time might be up with his company and Tank, but there are no hard feelings on his part.
"Nothing lasts forever. I will always love Tank. I like him. Love him — look at him as a son. He has to do what's best for him,” said Mayweather.
“I feel like I've done a great job thus far, building him and putting him in good fights, great fights. He's steady growing, he's steady learning. I'm proud of him."
Despite potential problems on the horizon between Mayweather and Tank, that did not get in the way of the multi-division champion talking up the fight. No surprise, given Mayweather’s commitment to business, and with Romero another fighter in his stable.
"Two heavy hitters. Of course Tank has more experience at this level at this particular time than Rolly,” said Mayweather, who also promotes Romero.
“He talks a good game but he also fights a good game because he's undefeated. It's a very exciting matchup between two heavy hitters. Everybody is anticipating this fight... this is going to be a blockbuster fight.”
