Fight strategies are largely kept secret in boxing, but Darren Barker was exposed to one set of tactics when stopping at a petrol station recently.
The former world middleweight champion bumped into Daniel Dubois when filling up his car and the talk quickly switched to the heavyweight's upcoming battle with Anthony Joshua on September 21, live on DAZN .
Dubois will be looking to defend his IBF crown when he faces Joshua at Wembley Stadium and he’s entering the bout in a confident manner despite being a sizeable underdog.
Dubois’ most recent form has seen him take more risks and go on the front foot and despite that tactic making his defences more open, it appears to be the way he intends to defeat Joshua.
In his last bout, against Filip Hrgovic, Dubois swallowed numerous right hands from the marauding Croat, but he was able to weather the storm and eventually force a stoppage.
That plan may carry risks against Joshua, but Barker has revealed that it’s the direction that Dubois is leaning towards.
“I see Daniel Dubois recently at a petrol station and I said, ‘congratulations on your win over Hrgovic’,” said Barker when speaking to DAZN Boxing .
“He said, ‘We’re gonna do exactly the same thing [against Joshua]. We’re gonna do the same thing against AJ. Be in the centre of the ring and be the boss.’ I don’t know if that’s the right idea.
“My big concern from the Filip Hrgovic fight is the amount of right hands that he ate.”
