Though Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are the women on the marquee for one of the biggest and most important nights in boxing history, two other top-drawer women's combatants used the Madison Square Garden platform in the best possible way on Saturday.
Franchon Crews-Dezurn defeated Elin Cederroos via a 10-round unanimous decision with scorecards of 99-91, 99-91 and 97-93 to unify the super-middleweight division's entire collection of world championships. While the American enjoyed a strong win on the cards, this was nonetheless an all-out war in which both combatants traded and received huge shots.
The bout proved to be a masterstroke addition to the Taylor-Serrano undercard by Eddie Hearn and Jake Paul, co-promoters of the seminal fight night. And Crews-Dezurn is not only very likely to return to the women's P4P top 10 list with the achievement, but made it clear who she wants next in her emotional post-fight interview.
She respectfully called out Claressa Shields, who is no stranger to unifying divisions and completes the current P4P top three along with Taylor and Serrano. Shields defeated Crews-Dezurn in what was the pro debut of both fighters in 2016 over four rounds, but needless to say a rematch would be a different story.
