Daniel Dubois will defend the IBF heavyweight championship against fellow British fighter Anthony Joshua in September, and Frank Warren believes the bout will be "something special."
Dubois won the IBF interim title with an eighth-round stoppage against Filip Hrgovic in June, and he was elevated to full champion later that month after former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt. Dubois' new status gives an extra bit of spice to the Sept. 21 fight that was already shaping up to be one of the biggest of the year.
"Two of the biggest punchers in the heavyweight division, out of the top four heavyweights in the world there's two of them, and it's going to be a brilliant fight," Warren explained in an interview posted on Queensberry Promotions' YouTube channel.
"When you've got Brit against Brit, which we know in this country always delivers competitive fights, always delivers, it will be something special. And added again that little bit of icing or cherry on top of the cake is it's Queensberry against Matchroom again."
Warren's Queensberry Promotions and Matchroom Boxing, who promote Joshua, engaged in a 5v5 event in Saudi Arabia earlier this year that saw all five Queensberry fighters claim victory — including Dubois in the aforementioned interim title bout against Hrgovic.
While Joshua was not part of the 5v5 showdown, Warren believes Dubois will be highly motivated to continue his form from that event in looking to take down another high-profile Matchroom fighter.
"Daniel, who's the newly crowned IBF champion, having won the interim against Hrgovic in great style in Riyadh ... this being his first defence, he's determined to make a statement," Warren said.
