'I've not really watched it back!' - Galal Yafai not looking to the past in bid as headliner status beckons

'I've not really watched it back!' - Galal Yafai not looking to the past in bid as headliner status beckonsMark Robinson / Matchroom Boxing

Galal Yafai admits he has not watched back his amateur bout with Sunny Edwards, but says he is excited to headline a major fight for the first time live on DAZN this weekend.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games star, who won a gold medal in the flyweight category, will face off with the former IBF flyweight champion at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham.

Much has been made of Yafai's pre-existing relationship with Edwards ahead of their bout for the interim WBC world title, having lost to him before he turned professional.

But speaking on DAZN's FACE OFF before their encounter, the former is just as excited to settle the score with his former sparring partner as a major fight card headliner.

Usyk vs Fury competition

"You know, I've not really watched it back," he said. "I think it’s on YouTube now. I’ll have to watch it. But I think we’re both different now, so there’s nothing I can take from that.

"I'm normally in fights that, to be quite frank, no-one gives a s—t [about]. When I’m fighting foreigners, and in America, I’m on these cards where no-one really watches.

"With someone like Sunny, there’s history. He’s beaten me in the amateur [careers]. We’ve sparred a lot. We'll put the record straight when we fight on November 30."

Yafai has only fought eight professional bouts so far, but arrives with an unbeaten record into this contest, most recently stopping Sergio Oliva in the third round in September.

Edwards meanwhile has a 21-1 reputation to his name, and bounced back from his lone career loss to Jesse Rodriguez with an eighth-round win against Adrian Curiel in June.
