Sergio Mora believes Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez should fight Gennadiy Golovkin when he returns to the ring next year.
The 31-year-old Mexican said he would not consider his next move until January next year, with a fight expected to take place in May when an opponent is decided.
Given Canelo’s fame and stature, there are no shortage of options for his next fight, but he must weigh up his desire to build a legacy, win titles, and face a challenge. A move to 175lbs may seem logical given his capture of the WBO light heavyweight belt in 2019 from Sergey Kovalev, and even a cruiserweight challenge has not been ruled out.
However with Khazkhstani fighter Golovkin 39 and approaching the end of his career and in possession of the IBF middleweight belt, there is little time left to resolve their rivalry. Their first 2017 match resulted in a split draw before Canelo won the 2018 rematch. There remains much discussion over those two fights and the victory of a potential trilogy rematch. Mora thinks that is the fight that should be made next.
“I think right now Canelo needs a much deserved rest because he's been fighting way too much, cleaned out the division in 11 months - right now rest is the main thing,” he said on JABS as part of the DAZN Boxing Show.
“We can debate this and I'm with you here. I think he should fight Gennady Golovkin because there's a trilogy that needs to be met here. I would love to see that third fight even though Canelo is going to be the favourite here, but most trilogies we know who’s gonna win, but we still need to close that chapter.”
Mora then mentioned some potential rivals to come, also at 160lbs.
“You got [Demetrius] Andrade, you got [David] Benavidez, you got [Jermall] Charlo. These guys potentially are all fighting, so who's gonna deserve that slot? Who’s gonna deserve that pay day, who's gonna hopefully deserve Canelo after this fight? So give me one of those young champions as well.”
