Gennadiy Golovkin is of the impression that Canelo Alvarez’s loss to Dmitry Bivol earlier this year will improve the Mexican as a fighter.

A significant favourite entering the bout in May, Canelo had no answer for Bivol’s consistent attacks and there were no surprises at the end of the contest when Bivol was declared the victor.

Instead of feeling sorry for himself in the defeat’s aftermath, Canelo will once again jump into a hard fight when he faces his rival for a third time in September.

‘GGG’ has been desperate to secure another fight with Canelo since losing to him in 2018, but he’s expecting a better version after Canelo came up short against Bivol.

“I’ve watched some highlights of some fights but I’m not following [Alvarez] and thinking about him. It’s not on my radar,” said Golovkin when speaking to BoxingScene

“I know a lot of people do not believe me, but I did not watch the fight live or after. I did watch the highlights. There were no surprises for me. Bivol was Bivol. Canelo was Canelo. It was a good day for Bivol, and it was not a good day for Alvarez.

“You learn from losses. We’re at the level that a loss can only make you stronger. I think it’s good for Canelo because that loss kind of brought him back to reality. He will make the right conclusions from that fight to be a better boxer.”
