On Saturday, George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney lock horns to determine an undisputed lightweight champion from Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
As always, there are plenty of bets to be made with a big-time boxing card. Let's take a look at some of them.
George Kambosos Jr. vs. Devin Haney odds
Devin Haney: -165
George Kambosos Jr.: +140
(All odds via BetMGM)
BetMGM (as of Wednesday, June 1) has Haney installed as the favorite — coming in at -165, meaning you'd need to bet $165 just to win $100. Meanwhile, Kambosos is a live underdog at +140, meaning if you pluck down $100, you will win $140 if the Australian can become the first four-belt 135-pound champion on home soil.
Kambosos (20-0. 10 KOs) shocked the world two days after U.S. Thanksgiving as he dropped and defeated Teofimo Lopez by split decision to win three-fourths of the 135-pound belts.
Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) won the vacant interim WBC title with a fourth-round stoppage over Zaur Abdullaev in September 2019. After Vasiliy Lomachenko was declared "The Franchise" champion by the sanctioning body, Haney was elevated to full term champion.
In 2021, the narrative on Haney changed because of the step up in competition. Haney took on former 135 and three-division champion Jorge Linares in May 2021. Besides an overhand right which rocked him for the first time in his career, Haney gained the most significant win at that time, dominating throughout to win by unanimous decision.
Haney followed that performance up at the beginning of December with a commanding showing over former 130-pound titlist Jo Jo Diaz to storm into the fight he's been dreaming of.
George Kambosos Jr. vs. Devin Haney prediction
Kambosos vs. Haney is a better fight than the current odds make it out to be.
Kambosos shocked the boxing world when he dropped Lopez, got dropped later in the fight, yet still walked out of New York with the IBF, WBA (super) and WBO belts. His confidence is at an all-time high heading into his own backyard.
The odds are stacked against Haney going into the fight of his life. Haney's father Bill and trainer Ben Davison were unable to travel to Australia due to different visa issues. In addition, former IBF lightweight champion, training partner and past Kambosos opponent Mickey Bey was not part of the fight camp because he was preparing for a fight against Tevin Farmer. However, none of that has bothered Haney as he's kept focused and locked in on the ultimate prize that awaits him if "The Dream" gets past Kambosos.
Kambosos is going to come out, attempt to do to Haney what he did to Lopez and that's put on constant pressure and make Haney fight off his back foot. Haney is a much better boxer than Lopez and is the best pure pugilist in the division.
Haney is going to be smarter than Lopez was and negate Kambosos by moving and countering whatever comes his way. His boxing IQ is superb and his speed is vastly underrated.
The -165 play isn't a bad one to make as I like Haney to win the fight outright and come back to the United States with all four lightweight titles.
But we are in the business of making money. The smartest play is Haney by stoppage at +450. He does have 15 knockouts in 27 victories and possesses sneaky power. Remember, Kambosos was knocked down by Lopez in the latter stages of the fight so the possibility of a knockout is there.
