Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is set to face Ilunga Makabu for the WBC world cruiserweight title next year.

WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu has issued a warning to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez ahead of a possible clash in May 2022.

After beating Caleb Plant two weeks ago to become the undisputed champion at 168lb, Canelo is set to move up the weigh divisions in a bid to become a five-weight world champion.

Speaking at the 59th WBC convention this past week, Makabu was excited at the thought of facing Canelo, but believes the Mexican is making a huge mistake.

"Yes, I accept the fight,” Makabu said at the convention.

“When I got this news from my manager and (WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman), I said, ‘Wow! This is something good.’ Canelo is the best boxer on the planet right now. So, I want to fight the best, and I accept, but there will be no catchweight for this fight.

"I think Canelo is making a big mistake, which he is going to regret."

The Congolese fighter also made a bold prediction for the upcoming fight with the world's number one pound-for-pound fighter.

"Canelo wants to prove to people that he can do better than others and I am quite prepared to let Canelo try for this dream, but I‘ve got my also story to write down.

"Yes, this is boxing. I lost to Tony Bellew, but I came back. Now I’m telling you 100%, I will knock out Canelo.”
