Is Canelo Alvarez on the decline? Edgar Berlanga gives his verdict

Is Canelo Alvarez on the decline? Edgar Berlanga gives his verdictDAZN

Promising American super middleweight has given his thoughts on whether the undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is on the decline.

Berlanga returns to action on Saturday night, live on DAZN, when he takes on Jason Quigley in New York, and if the 26-year-old can make a statement, he will no doubt be chasing the biggest names at 168lbs.

One of those is Alvarez, but while Berlanga has made not secret about wanting to face the Mexican, there are some fans who believe that Berlanga does not deserve the opportunity.

"They said the same thing when Teofimo [Lopez] fought [Vasiliy] Lomachenko, they said the same thing when Teofimo fought Josh Taylor, everybody said that he was going to get knocked out," Berlanga told The DAZN Boxing Show when asked to give a response to his critics.

"Like I always say, as long as I’ve got God, my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, I’m working.

"The most important thing for me is that I’m back with my old trainer, the guy that actually made me."

Berlanga then went onto explain why despite believing that Alvarez is on the decline, one of the world's best pound-for-pound fighters is still a threat inside the ring.

"I see a little bit of a decline, but he’s still a monster," Berlanga said.

"I take my hat off to him, you see what he did to John Ryder, even though people would say it was a tough fight, he broke that dude down. He beat the s— out of him for 12 rounds."
