The DAZN Boxing Show discussed if people are losing interest in Jake Paul ahead of his bout with Tommy Fury.
The celebrity pair will face off on December 16 in Florida for Fury’s second stateside bout. Fury is nominally a professional boxer by trade, but has made much of his reputation off the back of a Love Island appearance.
Similarly, Paul is better known for his activities on YouTube than his boxing prowess, but both of them are unbeaten in their career so far.
That is due to come to an end in December for one of them, and Barak Bess and Akin ‘Ak’ Reyes discussed Paul’s position in boxing.
Barak asked: “He's good for doing a lot of promotion outside of the ring. But on a scale of one to 10 What's your level of interest in this particular fight between Tommy Fury and Jake Paul?”
Ak was ambivalent about the prospect, and replied: “I had interest when this fight was first announced because it was kind of legitimately the first boxer that Jake Paul is going to face off and we all want to know what that looks like.
“We're talking about a boxer who’s alongisde heavyweight champion of the world in Tyson Fury, he can give them all the advice in the world. But I'm kind of losing interest. I don't know. I'm not as interested as I was before. Now. I like the whole Spirit Airlines joke. He's witty when it comes to trolling as you always say.
“Maybe his trolling will keep people interested enough to tune in on that fight night, and I might be one of those fight fans. But I think Jake is good for boxing in a lot of other ways.
“What he's done for Amanda and just the new eyes that he brought to the sport.”
Barak agreed, telling Ak: “He definitely bought into it. So listen, anyone who's from boxing will tell you that every time Jake Paul fights there's a different crowd. So that's proof right there that he's bringing different people to the sport. And while he's fighting, he has people like Amanda Serrano, Regis Prograis, guys like that on his undercard and I'm gonna tell you right now, Jake Paul is great for boxing, whether you like him or not.
“He's getting legitimate boxers paid, and what he's done for Amanda Serrano, I will always appreciate that. And this is why I know he's good for boxing.”
