Ryan Garcia is set to face JoJo Diaz in his first fight since January 2nd.

One of boxing's biggest stars, Ryan Garcia, is set to return to the ring against former super-featherweight champion JoJo Diaz in the fall.

Garcia hasn't fought since January 2nd after beating Luke Campbell in Texas — the 22-year-old took a break from the sport due to mental health issues.

However, a fight with Diaz is getting a mixed response from fight fans.

Following his win over Campbell, Garcia was the mandatory challenger for Devin Haney's WBC lightweight title, a position which is also held by Diaz after beating Javier Fortuna at the start of July.

Therefore, if Garcia vs. Diaz does happen, it will see two mandatory challengers go head-to-head.

When discussing the clash on The DAZN Boxing Show, boxing reporter Chris Mannix said he likes the fight but is worried whether Diaz can cope with Garcia's punching power and speed.

He said: "What I questioned with JoJo Diaz in a Ryan Garcia fight is how does he responds to the kind of quick-twitch power that Ryan has.

"He's faced speed before with Gary Russell Jr. He's faced skill before with Tevin Farmer and Fortuna, he's never faced that quick-twitch left hook power shot that Ryan Garcia can hit you with."

Mannix also believes Garcia vs. Diaz will be a competitive contest, but a weaker opponent maybe best for the American as he plots his return to the ring.

"I've been in pretty constant contact with Ryan over the last few months and he has consistently said he wants to fight in August or September. The August date is clearly starting to slip away significantly, but he wants to get back, he wants to find a top guy." Mannix revealed.

"But if I'm Golden Boy and Ryan is coming off these mental health issues that caused him to take this break, I might want something a little bit less threatening than JoJo Diaz right now and potentially go into a JoJo-Ryan fight either in the final quarter of 2021 or the first quarter of 2022."
