Jack Massey hits out at Jai Opetaia's record ahead of huge cruiserweight battle

Jack Massey hits out at Jai Opetaia's record ahead of huge cruiserweight battleMark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing
Opetaia and Massey meet this weekend.

Jack Massey has the chance to cause one of the biggest boxing upsets of the year when he faces Jai Opetaia this weekend, live on DAZN .

The unbeaten Australian will be defending his IBF cruiserweight title against the Derbyshire man, and he begins the fight a significant favourite.

Opetaia burst onto the scene in 2022 when he became world champion with an excellent points win over Latvia’s Mairis Briedis.

Further wins over Jordan Thompson, Ellis Zorro, and a second win against Briedis have firmly established Opetaia as the world’s best cruiserweight.

In Massey, Opetaia will be facing a boxer in great form after becoming European ruler in his last fight against Isaac Chamberlain.

Massey is aware of what it takes to face an elite fighter after losing on points to Joseph Parker last year, and he’ll be eager to go one better against another boxer from the southern hemisphere.

8pm Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Kamil Szeremeta      Middleweight
7pm Skye Nicolson vs. Raven ChapmanFor Nicolson's WBC women's featherweight title
6pm Ben Whittaker vs. Liam CameronLight heavyweight
5.35pm Mohammaed Alakel vs. Jesus GonzalezLightweight

Despite Opetaia’ standing in the boxing world as an unbeaten champion, Massey has called into question the record of the man he’ll be facing on October 12.

“Watching him, you can't take it away from him that he's a very good fighter. He looks good. But if you look at who he's fought, it's only really been Breidis twice, hasn't it? Coming to the back end of his career,” said Massey when speaking to BoxingScene .

“But you can't take away the fact that when you watch him fighting, you can see that he's a very, very good fighter.

“You can't go in there underestimating him thinking he's only fought over-the-hill fighters. You can tell he's a good fighter and he's very good at what he does.”
