Jaime Munguia maintained his unbeaten run with a hard-fought win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but he needed a last round knockdown to secure the verdict in Ontario, California.
After 12 tough rounds, the talented Mexican was handed the nod by the ringside judges with scores of 114-113, 114-113 and 115-112 meaning that the final session was vital for Munguia's success.
Derevyanchenko, who has shared the ring with a number of boxing’s best fighters including Gennadiy Golovkin and Jermall Charlo, demonstrated throughout why he’s considered a stern test for anyone operating at middleweight at the division above.
His admirable efforts were not rewarded though due to Munguia just being too good at the vital moments.
Munguia now has a wealth of opportunities in front of him after securing win number 42, but what direction will the Golden Boy promoted head in?
A fight with Canelo Alvarez is still the big target but with options plentiful at 168lbs and also at middleweight, Munguia has plenty of options as he looks to test himself further.
