Leigh Wood’s experience will be his biggest asset when he faces Michael Conlan this Saturday night, exclusively live on DAZN. That’s the verdict of Jazza Dickens who shared ten memorable rounds with Wood back in 2020 en-route to securing MTK Global’s Golden Contract. The featherweight contender is an ardent observer of his division and he’s well placed to offer an expert opinion on the Nottingham world champion.
Wood makes the first defence of his WBA title against Conlan in his home city this weekend and it’s an event that appeared unlikely just over two years ago. Shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Wood was beaten by Dickens inside a congested York Hall. Both would fight for world titles the following year, but it was Wood who would claim glory.
His dominant win over China’s Xu Can came shortly before Dickens fell short against Kid Galahad. Wood demonstrated huge character following his loss to Dickens as he picked up British honours before upsetting Can. Dickens believes that Wood’s longer time in the ring, especially against solid operators, will be beneficial when he comes up against Conlan.
“It’s a great fight. One with many possible outcomes, but I just think what Wood has been through will help him,” said Dickens when speaking with DAZN.
“He’s been in hard fights against good opponents and he’s the type of fighter who learns from each fight and takes it with him. He’s done well since our fight and he’s in good form going in.
“Saying that, I can see Conlan running away with it also. He’s a clever fighter with so much skill and he definitely has it in him to box all night and win on points.
"It’s a brilliant fight. It’s going to be close. Both men can win, but I just think that Wood’s extra experience, especially in the last couple of years, can help him and get him over the line.”
