WBO light heavyweight champion Joe Smith Jr. has agreed terms to face Callum Johnson in New York on January 15th 2022 according to ESPN's Mike Coppinger.
Smith Jr. was due to make the first defence of his title against Umar Samalov at the end of October before the American was hospitalised with COVID-19. Top Rank tried to re-schedule the bout, but Russia's Samalov had encountered issues with his visa.
This will be Johnson's second attempt at winning a world title after being stopped by unified champion Artur Beterbiev in the fourth round in 2018.
The upcoming fight between Johnson and Smith Jr. should be a thrilling contest between two fighters who aren't afraid to brawl with explosive punches.
