Josh Taylor injured; undisputed title defense postponed to Feb. 26

Josh Taylor's homecoming as undisputed super lightweight champion is going to have to wait a couple of more months. 

On Thursday, it was revealed that Taylor suffered a knee injury in training, which forced him to pull out of his scheduled undisputed title defense against Jack Catterall on Dec. 18 at The OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, Taylor's home country. The fight has been rescheduled for Feb. 26 at the same venue.

“I’m gutted I won’t be able to defend my title on December 18 as originally planned, but I wanted to make sure I was 100 percent healthy to give my incredible fans the show they deserve," Taylor said. "This homecoming has been a long time in the making, and it will be worth the wait. I will see everyone on February 26.”

Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) gained all four 140-pound titles, knocking down Jose Ramirez in May to score a unanimous decision victory. 

Catterall's (26-0, 13 KOs) been longing for an opportunity to get a title shot. He's been the mandatory challenger of the WBO since 2019. He stepped aside for the Taylor-Ramirez fight to go through with the guarantee he'd get the winner. Now, he'll have to wait a little bit longer.

“Everything happens for a reason! I am gutted not just for me but for everyone who had planned to go,” Catterall said. “I will remain professional and continue working for the new date. 2022, I will be world champion. Obstacles like this are nothing new for me. I will turn the frustration into positive energy.”
