The Scottish bantamweight had to retire due to 'unforeseen circumstances'.

Kash Farooq has said it is a ‘shock’ that he had to retire from boxing aged just 26.

The announcement of his retirement was made on Thursday, with Matchroom Boxing saying that the decision was taken by the Scottish bantamweight fighter due to ‘unforeseen circumstances.’

In a statement released on Saturday, Farooq said: "It would be selfish of me to put myself in danger. Therefore, my trainer Craig [Dickson] and manager Iain Wilson have instructed me to heed the advice from medical professionals.

"This is still a shock for me, as it would be for many others. I am a young athlete who had plenty to offer with unspeakable potential and talent."

In November 2019 he fought Lee McGregor for the Commonwealth bantamweight championship but lost in a controversial split decision.

Farooq had 16 wins in 17 fights and was a Lonsdale Belt winner when he defended his British title, and will remain in boxing as he works with promoters St Andrew’s Sporting Club.
