Whenever a fighter wins a world title in a weight class other than heavyweight, questions are immediately asked about whether they will move up.
Similar questions have been put towards Kid Galahad since he claimed the vacant IBF world featherweight title after beating Jazza Dickens at Fight Camp last August.
While a move up to super-featherweight does interest Galahad, he stated it will only happen when the time is right.
“We’ll move up if an opportunity presents itself, but at this moment in time, we don’t need to,” Galahad said in an exclusive interview with DAZN.
“I’ve still got to accomplish things in this [featherweight] division. I want to unify this division and win the Ring Magazine belt. I’ve got to make sure I do a job on Kiko Martinez on November 13th, otherwise all this goes out the window.”
Galahad’s attitude is a throwback to some of the old school fighters who went onto dominate the sport and their respective weight divisions. The Sheffield fighter will be looking to create his own legacy at 126lbs and not follow the current trend of some modern day world champions who in Galahad's eyes make one or two defences and disappear.
“Anyone can be a world champion, I want to make sure I can stay a world champion for a long time, I don’t want to be one of these kids that has one or two defences and disappears.
“I want 10 or 20 defences of my world title then I’ll move up to super-featherweight, I want to unify this division, make 10/20 defences, move up and do the same again, and you want to leave a statement in the division you’re in.
“For me I’d rather have 30 defences instead of fighting in front of thousands of people.”
Galahad hopes to begin his domination of the featherweight division on November 13th when he defends his IBF title for the first time against Kiko Martinez exclusively on DAZN (Except for Australia and New Zealand).
