Eddie Hearn described Leigh Wood’s victory over Michael Conlan as ‘the most dramatic fight I have ever witnessed live.’
Wood delivered a remarkable right-hand knockout in the 12th round that sent his Irish challenger through the ropes, head first onto the arena floor, and to hospital.
Fortunately, Conlan confirmed on Sunday morning that he was not in any danger, but Hearn said to the BBC after the fight that he thought Conlan was in trouble.
“Look, the referee had to let him carry on because he was standing, but he was gone. Gone,” Hearn explained.
“But he was gone for the second and third round as well. He was holding on for dear life. He got crippled to the body. Conlan was brilliant, brilliant.
“That fight was the best fight. The most dramatic fight I have ever witnessed live. Unbelievable, and like I say, we should be cracking a beer open in the changing rooms tonight and thanking our sport.
“Instead, we just pray for Michael Conlan, and I believe he will be OK. We’ll get the updates as they come, and we will keep everyone posted, but please, God, he’s OK. What a fight.”
