British super bantamweight champion Dennis McCann predicts that Liam Davies will successfully retain his world title against Shabaz Masoud next month.
Davies is the IBO belt holder, and he fights Masoud on July 20, a week before McCann’s European title fight against Ionut Balut (live on ESPN+ in the US).
Both are talented British contenders, and McCann concedes that the champion is top of the pile when it comes to UK fighters in the division.
“Listen, Liam Davies is the top of the bunch at the moment. He’s proved it. Let’s get that right,” he told BoxingScene .
“My time is coming. I’m getting the experience behind me and I’ve got a good team. That’s what I’ve needed all this time. I definitely think that over the next 12 to 15 months I’ll prove I’m the best one.”
While McCann rates both fighters, he gave the edge to the incumbent.
He continued: “[Davies] has surprised me, I have to be honest. I think he’ll do a job on Shabaz Masoud. I don’t know if I’m sold on him. He’s doing well and had some great wins, but I think Davies will maybe stop him.”
