Michael Conlan's spotless professional record continued as he knocked TJ Doheny down once on route to a consummate unanimous decision victory at Falls Park in Belfast on Friday.
A packed crowd on a rainy evening enjoyed an entertaining undercard before Conlan, the star of the show, made a spine-tingling entrance.
And his showing against former world titleholder Doheny polarised many fans across the globe, but the Rio 2016 Olympic boxer showed great footwork and admirable maturity in keeping his persistent adversary on a leash.
Good work to the body put Doheny to the canvas in the fifth, but Conlan opted not to attempt an aggressive follow-up for the finish. And while Doheny caused Conlan some trouble in three of the 12 rounds, it was mission accomplished for the now 16-0 (8 KOs) prospect who will likely now pursue a world title fight next.
Promoter Bob Arum had previously spoken about getting Conlan out at Madison Square Garden, where the Irishman is certain to pack the building with a racuous and partisan following, possibly before 2021 is out.
