Mikaela Mayer is backing Claressa Shields to gain revenge over Savannah Marshall when the pair renew hostilities on September 10th in London.
Marshall remains the only person to have ever defeated Shields in a boxing ring when they met as amateurs in 2012, but her form in the sport since that defeat is flawless and she’ll be hoping to set the record straight in just over two months.
Mayer, who will provide support to the main evert when she clashes with Alycia Baumgardner on the undercard, knows Shields as well as anyone in a professional capacity.
A witness to her amateur team-mate’s sole setback, Mayer is insistent her compatriot will be successful when the second meeting comes around.
“I think that Claressa Shields is going to overwhelm her punches and combinations,” said Mayer when speaking to The DAZN Boxing Show.
“I do think Savannah is a good boxer and she’s proven herself to be a strong puncher, but I do think that there are some weaknesses there.
"She’s never really fought somebody with the pedigree that Claressa has at this level. I just see Claressa coming out on top.”
