The father and trainer of David Benavidez, Jose Benavidez, has criticised the undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for avoiding a fight with his son.
Canelo became the number one fighter at 168lbs after beating Caleb Plant last month and is now considering a move to the cruiserweight division where he will face WBC champion Ilunga Makabu.
When asked about whether he would welcome a clash with Benavidez, Canelo felt the 25-year-old brought 'nothing to the table'.
This unsurprisingly didn't sit well with David's father.
"They say David doesn't bring anything to the table, so what does that tell you? They're running and they're scared to fight David Benavidez," Benavidez Sr. told YSM Sports Media.
"It's a dangerous fight for them and they don't want to accept that challenge.
"It would be a great fight [between Canelo and David]. Nobody knows [Makabu]. Am I interested in seeing that fight? No. There are a lot of people who don't want to see that fight.
"Why is [Canelo] fighting at cruiserweight and not fighting at 168? Do you think it's better to fight [Makabu] than to fight David? We are number one, and he doesn't want to fight. I don't understand."
