Ohara Davies has called on Josh Taylor to consider his future following a dismal run that has seen him endure two losses against Teofimo Lopez and Jack Catterall.
Davies, who is also pondering his next move after a recent loss to Adam Azim, has history with Taylor, but he’s advising his former rival to perhaps walk away from the sport.
In 2017, when both fighters were unbeaten, Taylor and Davies collided in a hostile clash where the Scotsman dominated before winning in the seventh session.
The victory would propel Taylor into world level contention, and he would eventually become undisputed champion at super-lightweight.
In 2022, Taylor’s run at the top came under severe scrutiny when he was dropped by Catterall before controversially winning on the scorecards.
The following year, Taylor travelled to New York, but he was beaten by Teofimo Lopez and then lost to Catterall earlier this year.
Taylor has not provided any evidence that retirement could be an option for him, and he is expected to continue with his career, but Davies believes that his time in the sport could be coming to an end.
“Taylor is not the same fighter he was. I think he needs to sit down and ask himself, ‘Is it worth it? Am I going to further tarnish my reputation?’” said Davies when speaking to BoxingScene .
“Because that has been tarnished after the Catterall fights and the Teofimo Lopez fight. The Taylor that we all know was a fierce fighter; walked through anyone, beat anyone, unbeaten, undefeated, undisputed.
“Now a lot of people are looking at him like a joke, like he’s a joke fighter, like he’s a walkover.”
