Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury 2 is only 10 days away and the DAZN Countdown returns today to look at a key moment in the career of Usyk.

We go back to 2016 and Usyk’s first world title fight.

World title glory was long expected for Oleksandr Usyk and he would get his chance in fight number 10.

An outstanding amateur who captured gold at the legendary 2012 Olympic Games, Usyk made it clear he would not be waiting around for a big fight when turning professional.

After reaching 9-0 as a professional, Usyk, and those handling his career, believed the time was right to become world champion.

Aiming to prevent Usyk from achieving his dream was Poland’s Krzysztof Glowacki, an unbeaten Pole who had impressed in numerous high-profile fights.

Glowacki had become world champion the previous year following a thrilling battle with Marco Huck and he looked fine defending the belt against the excellent Steve Cunningham.

Possessing an impressive record, and huge power, Glowacki was Usyk’s biggest test to date, but the Ukrainian would not be daunted by what was supposed to be a significant test.

Travelling to Poland, if Usyk was to become world champion, he was about to do it the hard way as Glowacki had the passionate backing of his country.

Usyk was well aware of the power possessed by his opponent, and it was clear early in the fight that Usyk was going to use his superior skillset to get him over the line.

Although Glowacki had the heavier hands, he was unable to get into position to land powerful shots that could turn the fight into his favour.

Usyk made a dominant start with his southpaw jab, and he was in no mood to surrender the lead as ran out a big winner on the scorecards.

Verdicts of 119-109 and 117-111 x 2 were enough to crown Usyk world champion, and the platform for a legendary run at cruiserweight was created.

Over the next two years, Usyk would capture all four world titles before departing for heavyweight in 2018 after beating Tony Bellew in Manchester.
