On this day in boxing history: the rivalry between Mike Weaver and Michael DokesDAZN

On December 10, 1982, the boxing world witnessed a dramatic clash in Las Vegas as Michael Dokes defeated Mike Weaver in little more than a minute to claim the WBA heavyweight title.

The fight became one of the most talked-about bouts of the era, setting the stage for a fierce rivalry that would continue into 1983.

Let’s revisit these two fighters, their unforgettable matchups, and their legacies in heavyweight boxing.

Who was Michael Dokes?

Michael ‘Dynamite’ Dokes was one of the most promising heavyweights of the early 1980s. Born in Akron, Ohio, Dokes rose through the amateur ranks with a combination of speed, power, and technical skill.

Turning professional in 1976, Dokes quickly established himself as a contender, showcasing his explosive style and earning victories over notable opponents like Jimmy Young.

Known for his charisma and electric energy in the ring, Dokes was often compared to the legends of the heavyweight division.

By the time he faced Weaver in 1982, he was widely regarded as one of the division’s brightest talents.

Who was Mike Weaver?

Mike ‘Hercules’ Weaver, by contrast, was the epitome of grit and perseverance. A Marine, Weaver had a late start in boxing but quickly earned a reputation for his incredible punching power and durability.

Weaver’s breakthrough came in 1980 when he defeated John Tate with a dramatic 15th-round knockout to claim the WBA heavyweight title.

Despite his quiet demeanour outside the ring, Weaver was a formidable presence inside it, known for his relentless determination and ability to absorb punishment while waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Dokes vs. Weaver: 1982

The first fight between Dokes and Weaver took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and was promoted by Don King. Weaver entered as the defending WBA champion, while Dokes was the hungry challenger eager to claim his first major title.

Always known as a fighter who started his fights quickly, Doakes was electric in the first fight, showering his more fancied opponent with heavy blows as soon as the fight started.

In a shocking turn of events, Dokes overwhelmed Weaver with a ferocious flurry of punches right from the opening bell.

Referee Joey Curtis stopped the fight just 1 minute and 3 seconds into the first round, a decision that sparked controversy.

Weaver and his camp protested, claiming the stoppage was premature, but the result stood, and Dokes was crowned the new WBA heavyweight champion.

Dokes vs. Weaver: 1983

The rematch in 1983 offered Weaver a chance at redemption. This time, the bout was much more competitive and gruelling, showcasing the contrasting styles of the two fighters.

Dokes’s speed and combinations were countered by Weaver’s resilience and heavy-handed power. After 15 intense rounds, the fight was declared a majority draw, allowing Dokes to retain the title.

While the decision disappointed Weaver, it solidified the rivalry as one of the most compelling in heavyweight boxing.

The legacy of their rivalry

The Dokes-Weaver rivalry epitomised the unpredictability and drama of heavyweight boxing in the 1980s.

Dokes’s meteoric rise and tragic later struggles (he spent time in jail for assault on his fiancé and died of cancer at the age of 52) contrasted with Weaver’s steady, hard-earned success (which saw him fight professionally until he was 49 years old), make their clashes a study in raw talent and flair versus perseverance.

Their battles remain an integral part of heavyweight boxing history, highlighting the passion and intensity that defined the sport during an era of big names and big fights.
