Oscar De La Hoya came agonisingly close to denting Floyd Mayweather’s undefeated record. After losing a split decision to “Money” in 2007, De La Hoya would retire the following year but he’s often held interest in vandalising Mayweather’s precious slate.
Through Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley and Canelo Alvarez, all once members of the Golden Boy stable, De La Hoya has always held the belief that if he couldn’t beat Mayweather then one of his fighters could. It’s a trend that’s continuing even with Mayweather’s career seemingly over.
Gilberto Ramirez, now part of De La Hoya’s promotional group, currently boasts a record of 41-0. That’s touching distance of Mayweather’s mythical 50-0 status and the 1992 Olympic gold medallist believes he can guide the former 12st world champion past the mark left by De La Hoya’s great rival.
“The long-term plan is to get him to 52-0, get him to break the record that Floyd Mayweather holds,” said De La Hoya at a virtual press conference discussing Ramirez’ July 9th meeting with Sullivan Barrera in a fight that will be shown in multiple regions live on DAZN .
“We want to get him to that undefeated record, break that record of 50-0. Then he will break another record. He was the first Mexican super middleweight champion ever. Now he can be the first fighter to break Floyd Mayweather’s record.”
