Oscar de la Hoya opens door to work with Canelo Alvarez in the future

Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar de la Hoya is hopeful he can work with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in the future.

De la Hoya was the Mexican's promoter during his rise to superstardom and while Alvarez is now working with Matchroom following a public falling out with Golden Boy, the boxing legend believes the door is not completely shut on two working together.

"I think that if the opportunity presents itself, you never know in boxing," De la Hoya responded when asked by The DAZN Boxing Show whether he would like to rekindle his relationship with one of the world's best pound-for-pound fighters.

"Outside the ring we have the knowledge, the expertise, we’re promoters that know what we’re doing.

"Imagine Canelo coming back to Golden Boy for a mega-fight, that would be an event in itself.

"I wish Canelo all the best, he is building his legacy and I want him to have these major fights to continue building his legacy because he’s at the tail end of his career.

"Now he has an injury on his hand and who knows how he is going to perform when he fights, but you want to know as a fighter when you have those last fights in your career, you want to make the best of it, you want to fight the very best."

De la Hoya was also asked to give his thoughts on a potential rematch between Alvarez and WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.

When the two fighters met last May, it was Bivol who emerged victorious with a convincing points win, but Alvarez is keen to face the WBA 175lb champion for a second time at super middleweight.

This drop in weight could serve in the Mexican's favour if the two were to meet, however, De la Hoya claims that Canelo's style is one that cannot beat Bivol regardless of the weight stipulation.

"Look, styles make fights and I’ve always said a Canelo style would never beat a Bivol style. It’s written on stone," De la Hoya said when asked to give his thoughts on the fight.
