The champion had tested positive for a banned substance prior to the fight, which was nonetheless allowed to continue as scheduled.

Oscar Valdez and controversy continued to go hand-in-hand on Friday night in Tuscon, Arizona, as he overcame a stern test in the form of Brazil's Robson Conceicao to retain his WBC super-featherweight championship via unanimous decision.

While many believed it was conceivable that Valdez came out of a close encounter on top, all three judges ruled the fight in his favour with scores of 117-110, 115-112 and 115-112 again. The 117-110 in particular had onlookers in disbelief, given the body of the main event contest.

This follows on from the recent news surrounding the 30-year-old Valdez testing positive for banned substance phentermine, a weight-loss drug, only for all involved to choose to allow his first defence of the belt he won earlier this year with a spectacular stoppage of Miguel Berchelt to go ahead anyway.

Valdez said after the bout: "I've been through enough this week, man. It makes the fight complicated when someone is trying to run the whole fight.

"If he wants to run? You can't win a fight running like that.

"We all want the winner of Shakur Stevenson and Jamel Herring. Let's do it."
