Rocky (1976)

Why it’s great: Sylvester Stallone’s iconic underdog story is synonymous with boxing movies. ‘Rocky’ follows Rocky Balboa, a small-time Philadelphia boxer, as he gets an unexpected shot at the heavyweight title. Raging Bull (1980)

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Why it’s great: Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this emotional tale of a determined female boxer, played by Hilary Swank, and her relationship with her reluctant trainer. It’s a poignant story about dreams, sacrifice, and resilience. Swank won the Best Actress Oscar for her role, while there were also Oscars for Morgan Freeman (Best Supporting Actor), Best Film and Best Director.

The Fighter (2010)

Why it’s great: based on the true story of boxer Micky Ward, this movie features stellar performances by Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams. ‘The Fighter’ highlights the complex dynamics of family and the struggles of overcoming adversity in and out of the ring.

Cinderella Man (2005)

Why it’s great: Russell Crowe stars as James J. Braddock, a Depression-era boxer who rises from hardship to challenge for the heavyweight title. Directed by Ron Howard, this inspiring true story showcases the power of determination and the spirit of redemption.

Southpaw (2015)
