Pat McCormack’s Olympic dreams were ruined by Roniel Iglesias as the Cuban veteran proved too smart for the British fighter.
McCormack had been in brilliant form heading into the final but it looked to be a fight too far as Iglesias appeared to be the fresher fighter from the first bell.
Iglesias’ combinations in the first round caught the eye far more than McCormack’s industry as the Team GB star failed to land anything of note despite closing the distance on many occasions. Iglesias ended the first round in charge and things were about to get even better for the highly decorated boxer.
A brilliant left hand in the second round dropped McCormack but the referee refused to issue a count as he believed it was caused by the fighters’ feet coming together. That didn’t deter Iglesias who continued to boss the round.
With McCormack needing the session of his life in the final three minutes, Iglesias could be patient and pick off his opponent. All five judges gave the fight to Iglesias but McCormack can be satisfied with how he performed throughout the tournament and the silver medal he claimed for his efforts.
