Promoter asks if new champion is 'top option' to fight Gervonta 'Tank' Davis

Davis wants another fight in 2024.

Promoter Stephen Espinoza believes Jose Valenzuela might have moved into prime position to fight Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Davis’ last appearance was to defeat Frank Martin in impressive fashion, while Valenzuela pulled off an upset victory against Isaac Cruz at the weekend to become WBA super lightweight champion.

Davis is the WBA lightweight belt holder, but has fought at heavyweight weights before.

He had been linked with a move to fight veteran contender Vasily Lomachenko, but the Ukrainian appears content to sit out the rest of 2024.

Speaking to BoxingScene, Espinoza admitted that Cruz and Lomachenko were in the frame, but Valenzuela might now get a shot.

“It’s interesting. Everyone was sort of all-in on Lomachenko,” he stated.

“Everyone was hoping and there was good momentum behind that. That obviously is not happening. The obvious one lurking in the background was Pitbull [Isaac Cruz]. I think it’s a good question now. Does that mean [Jose] Valenzuela [who beat Cruz last week], that ‘Rayo’ is a top option?

“I think it’s reasonable to think so, but ultimately we haven’t really discussed any of that with Tank. He definitely wants to fight before the end of the year. Could be Valenzuela, but it certainly could be any number of other fighters.”
