From US Olympic rejection to world title shot - introducing IBF super lightweight title challenger Richardson ‘The Clinchman’ Hitchins,Ed Mulholland/Matchroom

American Richardson Hitchins is set to challenge undefeated Australian Liam Paro for his IBF super lightweight title, live on DAZN on Saturday night. But who is he?

What are his credentials and what should we expect from this former Olympian when he steps into the ring in Puerto Rico on Saturday night?

DAZN News takes a quick look at Richardson 'The Clinchman' Hitchins.

Olympic pedigree

Hitchins' journey to boxing prominence began on the international stage. Although he born in America, in Brooklyn, New York, when he was unable to qualify for the US Boxing team he opted to try out for Haiti where he was selected to represent the country of his parents’ birth.

He competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics and although he did not medal, the experience showcased his talent and provided the foundation for a transition into the professional arena.

His experience at Rio 2016 came to an end against American fighter Gary Antuanne Russell, the man who had kept him out of the US team in the first place.

Turning pro

After the Olympics, Hitchins signed with Mayweather Promotions, aligning himself with one of the most successful figures in boxing.

Under Floyd Mayweather's mentorship, Hitchins developed his craft, displaying slick defensive skills and sharp counterpunching that have become hallmarks of his style.

His debut professional fight was on March 17, 2017, on the undercard of the Keith Thurman versus Danny Garcia WBC World Welterweight title fight.

Undefeated record

Hitchins has compiled an 18-0 professional record, including seven knockouts. While not known for overwhelming power, his technical precision and ring IQ make him a difficult opponent.

He earned this title shot by defeating Gustavo Lemos earlier in 2024 in an IBF eliminator. While some commentators considered the result controversial, it was nevertheless unanimous, and it paced the way for Hitchins' shot at Paro's title.

Coming into the fight both boxers are undefeated, on Saturday that will likely end.

Style and strengths

Nicknamed "The Clinchman," Hitchins is renowned for his defensive abilities and his adaptability. He has a knack for controlling the pace of fights and neutralizing his opponent's offence.

His background in amateur boxing is evident in his discipline and footwork, which he uses to great effect in the ring. His last two fights were both against highly rated opponents.

Having parted ways with Mayweather Promotions to join the team at Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, he saw off three-time world title challenger Jose Zepeda in September before defeating the 29-0 Gustavo Lemos to earn his title shot.

World title opportunity

In facing Australia’s Liam Paro, Hitchins steps into his first world title bout.

Paro is a formidable opponent, with a 25-0 record, including a recent win over Subriel Matías to claim the IBF super lightweight belt.

Hitchins has expressed confidence, stating that this fight is his opportunity to establish himself as the best in the division.

This fight is a pivotal moment for Hitchins’ career. A victory would not only make him a world champion but also position him as a major player in the ultra-competitive 140-pound division.

A loss, however, could set him back significantly in a weight class brimming with talent.

As Hitchins steps into the ring at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, all eyes will be on whether his defensive mastery can outmatch the pressure and aggression of Liam Paro.
