Ryan Garcia described Leigh Wood vs. Michael Conlan as ‘one of the greatest fights’ he has ever seen.
The former WBC interim champion is back in action on April 9 on DAZN against Emmanuel Tagoe but took the time out from his preparations to watch the bout on Saturday evening.
“That was one of the greatest fights i [sic] ever seen if you didn’t see it don’t watch anything it was amazing hope conlan is okay,” he wrote on Twitter.
Eddie Hearn said similarly: “The most dramatic fight I’ve ever witnessed. All our thoughts with Michael Conlan right now”.
IBF flyweight world champion Sunny Edwards thought that Conlan was on his way to victory until the devastating knockout and had the Irishman’s health in his thought.
“Conlan had the fight won and spent the last couple of rounds swinging it out,” he began. “Think exhaustion blinded him and the last shot finished him on his feet. Great fight for both and Wood really did pull it out the bag when he needed to. Hope Conlan is okay & well done to Leigh Wood”.
Wood himself was magnanimous in victory.
“You are and will be a champ. It takes 2 to tango and we had a hell of a dance,” he tweeted.
Journalist Adam Catterall reflected on the effort put in by the eventual winner and also praised him for his muted celebrations in light of the concern for Conlan.
He said after the fight, “Leigh Wood epitomised everything that we love about boxing last night He delivered a Rocky Balboa comeback and in the emotional hight of doing so his only concern was for the well-being of his injured opponent. Says all you need to know about him. Class.”
