Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez might line up next against unified light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.
Canelo said he will consider his next step in January 2022, following his win against Caleb Plant at the weekend. The victory in Las Vegas leaves the Mexican as the undisputed super middleweight champion. While he might remain at 168lbs, there are other belts available if he moves up or down a weight class.
Alvarez already fought in 2019 at 175lbs to win the WBO light heavyweight belt from Sergey Kovalev, and has been linked with Joe Smith Jr, Dmitry Bivol and Beterbiev.
36-year-old Russian Beterbiev holds the WBC and IBF belts and is probably the best in the division. He would represent one of his toughest clashes in recent years.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman talked up a potential clash, telling Sky Sports: "Yes. Beterbiev makes a mandatory defence in December and will be open to do anything he wants to do.
"It would be a tremendous match.
"Beterbiev is undefeated, he is a heavy, heavy puncher.
"He would be a very strong threat to Canelo's legacy.
"But Canelo wants to keep going further and further so let's see."
