Golden Boy president Eric Gomez hopes to see William Zepeda move onto a Shakur Stevenson bout in the future.
Zepeda fights on July 6 live on DAZN, and his opponent for that bout will be Giovanni Cabrera.
The Mexican is unbeaten in his career so far, and Cabrera impressed despite losing to Isaac Cruz - the only defeat of his time in the ring as a professional.
Speaking to BoxingScene, Gomez acknowledged Cabrera’s talent.
“He’s tough – he’s a tough kid,” he said. “A little unorthodox, tough kid, very good record. Look, he gave Cruz a lot of fits. It was a split decision, it was tight, it was a close fight, so it’s a dangerous fight for Zepeda. But that’s what Zepeda wants.
“He wants fights that matter. He wants good fights. He’s marching his way towards a world title. Beating a guy like Cabrera is going to be a great notch for him and his career.”
On the same night Stevenson defends his WBC strap against Arten Harutyunyan (live on ESPN in the US), but Gomez is looking ahead.
“We agreed we could talk again later this year, but that’s one of the fights we want to explore,” he said.
